Hey up chaps,

I am an industrial electrician so i have very little knowledge on current regulations, I am to carry out a rewire of my new bungalow this weekend and was wondering about a couple of things, hopefully you guys can help...

* Do i have to put my sockets what seems like half way up the wall or am i okay to leave them at the normal height?

* Do i have to use capping in my chases or is it not a requirement?

* Do i have to have fire hoods on my (non fire rated) downlights?

There isnt anything else i can think of on hand but im sure there will be lots cropping up over the weekend,
If anyone can think of any other advice you think is benificial please let me know, it will be hugely apreciated!

thanks alot,
Phil..

As the installation is a rewire or refurbishment then no. The reg for DDI compliant socket and switch heights only deal with new installations.

The reg about capping is to say that the capping has to be metalic and earthed if you don't want to install an RCD. As far as I am aware there ios no requirement for capping. Saying that I would recomend capping as it keeps the cables out of the way while making good, also it protects the cables against the plaster damaging the installation

I'm not sure about this, however I would buy downlighters with built in hoods it is only marginally more expensive, and in the case of a fire it will mean the residence have longer to escape

Capping nails or alternatively drill plug and screw. Oval conduit is often much easier to work with.
Recessed lights between floors will definately require hoods!!! You are cutting 60mm+ size holes in the fire break between floors!!!

Haha it is a bungalow.
I have just ordered some fire rated downlight and i will take my other ones back to screwfix this afternoon. Saves all the chew.

Thanks guys.

Phil..

The requirement is that any cables which are less than 50mm must be protected by with earthed metallic protection unless protected by an RCD, I do not think that metal capping would come under this heading as this has been stated in a number of previous threads

Capping is there for purposes of plastering etc, it does not count as a metal protector as steel conduit does. it does not require an earth either
