Just seen the sister in-laws loft conversion. wow what a job they have done with it. 5 years ago when they bought the house the spark who did the pir told them they had a couple of years max left in the cables, ir was low. old wylex board better consigned to a museum cable that are 35+ years old. husbands a bit of a uilder(bodger) the lad down the street did the wiring for the loft. he is cheaper than you so were going to use him she said. (Thank **** for that) not worth the hassle. anyway still on the old board used the spare way from the old immersion heater. nothing rcd protected, all the lighting and sockets are wired through conduit  looks a right t***. now it`s not working propely will I have a look at it? i think not. although i did give her a quote for a full rewire that upset the Sunday afternoon. looks like it`s bodge it and scarpers turn again tomorrow then :D bloody in laws

Anyone who doesn't take the advice of close friends/family and gets in a cheapo bodger deserves everything they get. I really hope you stick to your guns and don't even look at it, because they'll get mr handyman back again and again and again, and will be praying to go back in time and pay you the original fee - I bet it wasn't even fifty quid more, am I right?

I have the same thing with in laws, and even some immediate family. I hear about them bad mouthing me behind my back and I don't give a monkeys, when it all goes belly up after Mr Zcychevozwski or my moron brother in law has been in there with his flex I'm sure I'll be far too busy to have a look at it. I don't know what part of 'I don't care if you don't want a certificate, I have to issue one' people don't understand. I always give family a very good rate, but some of them seem to think I can just magic materials out of thin air, and pause time to do their job so I'm not missing out on other work. Worse than normal customers, let me tell you.

agreed...!!

im currently avoiding doing a rewire on my parents house!!! i keep telling them that the wylex type B mcbs in there box with a seperate RCD is ok!! just need to install and earth and do bonding if any thing!! plus its a kitchen fitters box in job!! argh!!

your not far wrong. not a chance in me doing it. unless they want to fork out for the re - wire of course. not likely he squeaks louder than a mouse on helium when he walks. yeh they have bad mouthed me too expensive etc and joe bloggs down the street is much cheaper.once did a pir on her daughters house after she bought it, for a board change everything tested up ok just a couple of minor bits to do, next time we went round to drop off house warming pressie there was a shiny new board sat there. and that one was priced up at the cost of the board? thought i was doing her a favour nice kid first home and all that, i guess joe did it for a tenner with a knocked off board. my family completely different they want to pay you more than you would charge an average customer. nope no favours for that side of the family not until petrol is back down to 65 pence a litre anyway.
