Hi,

Just a quick question regarding inrush current for my pool lights circuit in my pool/cafe hotel project?

I was looking at 5 of these:
Pool LED - https://www.apollolighting.co.uk/products/pool_led/

125W per light (5x 125 = 625W / 230 = 2.72A)

Issue is that the inrush current per light is 165A (5x 165 = 825A) which will trip the protective device. I know you could use say a type C or D MCB but I cant find a list for Inrush current for MCB's?

Does anyone have link to mcb inrush currents for type b c d etc?



I did see this 16A Inrush current limiter:

Ok so I assume you are thinking about a B Type 60898?

Why do you think this will trip on an inrush current of 825A?

Ok take a 16A type B as an example:

For this to trip in 0.1 seconds would take 80A & the inrush current per light is 165A (825A for all 5 lights). As the inrush is more it will trip the protective device.

I realise Type B, C & D have the own inrush limits but I cant find these figures so have used the above as an example.

As I understand it inrush current is where the capacitors in this case on the lighting pcb draw current to charge up before the light operates normally. This high current inrush only lasts a split second & then drops back down to normal operating current.

You do have a copy of BS7671 and the Type C and Type D tables are directly after the Type B ones.

You also need to find out how long the inrush current lasts for on these fittings.

To me these inrush currents sound quite large. Does the project dictate what fittings you must use?

Yes was just using type b as an example.
The tables dont show their max inrush currents for each type.

No we can choose the fittings.
 
No graph shows inrush.

If you look at Fig 3A4 & 3A5 you will see a C Type 16A needs 160A to blow in 0.1 and a Type D needs 320A.

So as I see it you have three options. Any idea what those options are?

Different lights
Split lights on to multiple circuits
Inrush current limiter

Think I'll go with the inrush current limiter for the project as the lights meet specifications ie ambient temp, anti corrosion, Led efficiency, IP rating etc.
