Hi Guys,

One customer asked me to install an extractor fan on a double glazing window. I never have done this before. Is this difficult or not? What kind of tool shall i use?

Cheers

souds like he's got a faulty double glazed unit and wants somebody else to pay for the replacement. don't even look at it.

I've seen fans in double glazed units before but I would assume the unit was manufactured with the hole already in it - I always thought the space between the panes was vacuum sealed with some special gas to prevent condensation, therefore trying to drill through the lot would be asking for trouble.

common sense prevails. there is light at the end of the tunnel watch out for a bloody train, and yesw, the units are sealed. iof you manage to drill one without it shattering, you have breached the integrity of the unit. it is then as much use as a cfl lamp in a lighthouse

you would need to either take it in to get cut at a double glazing factory and have it edge welded and sealed as well as recharged with the Argon Nitrogen mix gas, or have a new pane made with a hole already in it, and in any case I think it is probably against building regulations in terms of the amount of heat it will let out, they dont like that and prefer you to core a hole out of the wall and fit a fan, even that is changing now with a new EU law coming in that says a special heat recovery unit has to be fitted to extractor fans in all new buildings etc.....it is a chunky piece of kit and if it wont fit into a space you just have to leave it, you cant put in a normal fan anymore.....and its about 300 pounds as compared to 20 or 30 pounds for an ordinary fan......I wonder if they own the patents to these or something...
