It came up in conversation about a bungalow being refurbished for a lady with mobility difficulties. It was suggested that in a two or three storey house if the person didn't want to move and they had the space, a lift could be an alternative. Stair lifts were mentioned too, but information on those is readily available.

So, anyone fitted a normal lift into a domestic property? Anyone know the costs involved? I ask purely out of curiosity as it's unlikely to be viable financially but it'd be interesting to know.

Stair lifts are installed by specialist companies (my mum had one fitted). All I did was provide a fused spur adjacent to where it would be "at the bottom" so it could charge when not in use (it charges when parked at the top or bottom).

It cost about £6k to be installed but hers went round a corner and needed a special designed "rail" to run on.

Hope this helps.

I've seen a couple of "lifts" but that involves far more work to install

Some just have a moulded plug so no need for a fused spur

Useful info, thanks.

They're dear, but I suppose when you compare them to the cost of moving house it makes more sense. The through floor lifts don't look like they'd take up much space either.

Fitting lifts is specialised so I doubt you’ll find anyone here. With regard to fitting and commissioning I’ve only overseen the pre handover checks for our company.
The last one I was so impressed with the company refused to accept until the installers put things right.
We carried out our own maintenance but the yearly inspection was by Lloyd’s.

I ripped out the stairs and installed one of these in my cattle barn . As my old man is getting on now , he uses it for getting bales from out of the hay loft above the stock pens ( only just used it today as my kids love riding in it with me ) !

I got it of fleabay for an absolute bargain price of £108 a couple of years ago . It took me and my brother about 6 hours to strip out and me about 10 hours to install the next day , but it was in a cattle barn so I had no making good to worry about .

Having said that , I would not consider doing one for a paying customer ! And any I have been involved with , when on council work have been installed new via specialist suppliers , with only the power connections organized by use .
