Hi guys,

Im currently looking to fit an outdoor light, doing it is not a problem, but would i need qualifications? is it against the law to fit without them? or?

Where do i stand?

qualifications are not an issue partp of building regs may be:
The installation of equipment attached to the outside of a house (for example security lighting) is not notifiable provided that there are no exposed outdoor connections and the work does not involve the installation of a new circuit or the extension of a circuit in a kitchen or special location

going by your post am i right in thinking that if you install the light outdoors and connect it to a normal socket outlet indoors, this is legal and non-notifiable?

If DIY, You should ensure that the work meets the requirements of BS7671 and any building regulations and should then be inspected by a qualified electrician. Preferably one who has trained in electrics and appropriate building regulations but is qualified for inspection and testing as required by BS7671.

That goes if the work is notifiable to building control or not.

This is for reasons of safety (part p), your insurance validity and avoid any doubt of enforcement action from the local authorities.

Part P; p12

The consumer unit is pretty close, and the back security lights which had been previously fitted by an electrician has been tied into the downstairs lighting, Im thinking of cabling it directly to the consumer unit...

providing the existing circuit you are extending from does not fall into special location category and the outdoor light is attached to a wall and has no other external connections then no it falls under minor works.

but as marty says "You should ensure that the work meets the requirements of BS7671 and is tested"
