We have been asked to install a fire alarm system in a Restraunt we regulary do electricial work in. Im just wonder if there is any qualication thats need other than Electrical Installation Certs? We have a good knowledge of installing fire alarm systems but just wondering if we need any certain certificates? Thanks.

Yes different certification is required
Because it is a public use building, reference should be made to Bs 5839-1 where all the required certification is modelled

Ok. I mean, if there any particular course to pass to be able to install fire alarm systems? Thanks.

Ash - installation of a fire alarm system is carried out to meet the requirements for installation set out in BS5839-1:200+A2:2008.

Most requirements for installation are those of BS7671.

It should carry certification compliant with this standard too.

My advice here, would be to get another fire company to design the system on your behalf, and to certificate that design. Once you've carried out installation, I would invite said company back to commission and hand the system over.

Probably a little more expensive than taking on the whole job yourself, but, safer - for you and the customer, and you get the benefits of working to a design someone else is certifying, removing risk from yourselves. Again, with commissioning, they will sign and cert - ensuring your work is right, and that the system works. You get some experience with fire alarms too, and after a few jobs this way, you'll start to get the basics.

Key thing - get the design certificated before you install anything.

The reason I'm putting it this way round is that restaurants can be difficult places to protect, depending upon how it operates - for example, there could be open flame in the kitchens, or in front of customers, lots of change of temperature an so on, especially during open hours. They're not going to thank you for a million false alarms either.

There is no "qualification" as such for fire alarm installation.

Well the fire officers come round and gave us loads of details on what system (L2) is needed and where call points/smoke/heat/etc... need to be. I was just wondering if a qualified electrician is legally aloud to install fire alarms or is there any other qualification needed? Cheers for all that infomation though.

Anyone (competent) can install afire system - no qualifications mandatory.

But, as I said before, the risk is also yours.
