hello

after some advice, need to replace existing 16mm tails as part of a consumer unit change. Existing tails appear to be run in cavity for 1 m to existing fusebox mounted on interior wall, from external meter cupboard.

intend to pass new 25mm tails & 16mm main earth thru the cavity wall, within external meter cupboard. ( protected by conduit ) and then run on the surface internally to new Consumer Unit ( 2x2 trunking )

my question is regarding drilling a new 25mm hole in the back of the meter cupboard, so i can access the cavity and then drill thru the internal wall, is this permitted ? or will i have to use one of the pre existing knockouts on the side which are not suitable for using conduit as protection for the tails and are located in the wrong place. The DNO is Western Power East Midlands

many thanks

yep....get on with it...
just be sure though wont you to caulc any gaps made so as to prevent water/rodent ingress etc
you are responsible for maintaining the structural & ingress integrity of the building fabric

That's what I have usually done , but the hole must be to the top right hand side , in case of any water entry and metering is uasually to the left , on Southern Electric that is o/k....

thanks for the replies guys make it so much easier to install mech protection for new tails if i can drill a new hole straight thru, rather than at an angle from the side. ill check as to weather it has to be in a certain spot, i was thinking top right anyway as its away from there meter and theres some free space. will seal with either siliconsealent or expanding foam

good lad ian

A nice piece of 32mm plastic waste pipe straight through the wall is great for passing tails/earth cable through. If you use a 32mm holesaw on the cabinet, it's a snug fit. All you need to do then is fill around the pipe where it enters inside.
