Hi - apologies if this in the wrong area, but I am new here!

I'm completing a university project on terminal boards and I'm having trouble with the calculations. I need to calculate whether the air-gap I have is a sufficient arc barrier. Hopefully the picture below will help.

600V DC cables terminate horizontally along top and bottom. The slot along the middle is the gap I'm referring to (for scale, this gap is 10mm).

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated as I'm getting desperate! Please note, it is the actual formula/calculations I need, not just a yes or no!

Thanks!!

Hi Telectrix. thanks for such a quick response! Coincidentally, I found this page about half an hour ago!! Its certainly the best thing I've found so far and its definitely the kind of thing I'm looking for. If all else fails, I'll use this. What I was hoping for was to find the theory/calculations behind this. i.e. not jumping straight from a voltage to a distance, but how they made that step.

I can see that it says its taken from empirical data, so perhaps its just read off a graph, and its as simple as that!

Thanks for your help! :icon4:

think it's something that eng54 or tony would have more info on there.
