After some quiet time I'm starting to get inquiries again! Thing is, now there's the Level D insulation requirement I'll need to get an energy assessment done, which isn't a problem except on the initial visit it would be helpful if I knew what was required to meet Level D so I can at least explore this part of the issue with the customer before getting in the assessor/inspector. Can anyone list off the sorts of things we should be looking for - double glazing? Depth of loft insulation? Cavity wall insulation? I haven't been able to find anything on-line to even point me in the right direction, so any such links would be appreciated.

Well where do we start?
As this is new ground for all of us I will give you my thoughts on it.
If it is a newish house, you should not have a problem, it is when you get to olders properties, with solid walls, and no mains gas, and single glazed etc etc.
As a guide, things that help are 270mm loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, double glazing with energy efficient glass, A rated appliances, energy saving light bulbs, condensing gas boiler (or GSHP/ASHP), smaller wall areas, IE terraced or semi rather than detached, but the good news is a PV system can add some points to bring the grade up a little, this however seems to vary from house to house.
I hope this helps.

I don't think "A rated appliances" count if you mean white goods like fridges, dishwashers, washing machines etc. A modern, A-rated boiler helps immensely, however. TRVs, thermostats and timing controls are also useful.

Most utility companies are providing this completely FREE of charge at the moment, but be fast as new Government rules are coming in fast..... problem is you have to look hard at their websites to find it - lol

Plus you dont have to be using that particular company to take up this free service of cavity fill and loft insulation.

I used EDF, who were brilliant and it didnt cost a bean....;

Free loft and cavity wall insulation^

Once you have this done, look in your local rag and find your nearest accessor who does an EPC for £ 50

My Tick list

-Evidence of cavity wall
-Boiler 5 years or less old
-270mm insulation
-Insulated or unvented water storage (if applicable)
-Low energy lighting (only 2 points)
-Double glazing less than 10 years old 20mm spacer

With that you would hope to be around a D,

If a house is less than 15 years old it should fly through EPC unless boiler lets it down.

The insulation is definately the focus on an EPC and plenty of options out there
