Hi,

Before starting to add a couple of sockets to an existing ring in a kitchen, I did the dead tests on the circuit. Insulation test gives me 0.3meg L to E and N to E,with 500ohms L to N. Any ideas on what I have missed switching off, just hope it is not the wiring. It looks as though someone has been playing with it!

All loads from circuit need to be removed and do you have any neons in the circuit they will play havoc with your readings.

Fridge into a hidden socket?

Trailing extension with something left in, often thrown up ontop of wall units but out of eye-shot?

When you get this situation do a test with live and neutral one one clip and earth on the other if reading is ok then you definitley have something on the circuit that should not be there.

Chris

check it on continuity see if you get a reading ,if you do go round the sockets one at a time the readings should increase the further away and de crease lower the reading closer you are to the plugged in appliance or fault ,may not work but worth a try ,i use this method when the readings are zero , and once ive cleared the fault etc i re do the IR test

Hello,

Thanks for your help, I used a combination of all your suggestions. It is amazing how many sockets are behind cupboards and forggoten, no matter how many times you ask are there any more things connected. TV aerial amplifier and a surge protector hidden under a pile of clothes.

Meter reading is now greater than 500meg.

Thanks

DaveW
