Hello again,

To wire an simple intercom system to 3 flats, what are the cable requirements. Before i have just taken a cat5 from each flat to the panel by the front door. At the front door a supply will be provided for the panel. Am i on the right lines, If not could some explain a or tell where i can find a wiring diagram.

Thanks

CAT 5 will do it, but the typical cable used is CW1308 - telephone cable, 6 pair - it's a communications system.

Don't EVER take mains to the door panel......not safe, not safe at all.

There is, within pretty well every door entry kit ever made, a transformer, which should be mounted internally, normally next to the fuse board and fed via an unswitched 3A fused spur. The transformer, for most basic kits, will supply 12VAC to the system.

The handsets get wired back to the door panel, the transformer ELV runs to the door panel. The lock pair runs to the panel - though for safety's sake we normally do things a little different to ensure the lock cannot be released by removing the door panel.

Thanks for that,

You are right i would never take the mains to the door either, i have installed intercom before but i have only taken the cable to panel and then another company would come and install the connections. The customer has Cat5 already so i doubt he will be keen to buy cw1308.

Cat5 is fine - it'll do the job without problems.

Take a cat5 from each handset to the door panel.
Take a Cat5 from transformer location to door panel.
Take lock to door panel.

You can get three way kits from most places - Bell (900), Fermax, or SRS are probably budget best. Can be got online easy enough, or over a lot of trade counters. Try here.
