I’ve got an awkward job to quote for. Take a look at the picture. I’m thinking of going for silver Hyundai 250s. I can fit 8 panels on the west facing roof, 4 facing east and 2 facing south. Some shading from the chimney on the south facing panels in the morning. Need to work out what inverter configuration to use. Options:

  1. Power One Aurora 3.0 (8+4) and Mastervolt Soladin 600
  2. Power One Aurora 3.0 (8+4) and Steca 500
  3. Power One Aurora 3.0 (8+4) and Enecsys
  4. Solar Edge on everything
  5. Three different inverters

Any thoughts or other ideas? Am I missing a blatantly obvious solution?

I wouldn't imagine that the shading from the chimney will have much of an effect to be honest.

If you can't fit more panels on the east facing roof (it looks like you should be able to?) then I'd go for the Solar Edge.

I did one with roof slopes facing in 3 directions a year ago where I was required to maximise the pv, so I put in two inverters - an aurora and a soladin. If I were doing it today based on my experience since I would go the solar edge route as it gives so much flexibility and even allows you to change you mind on panel positioning based on what you find once you are on the roof.

We went to do this job and found a problem with the Solar Edge. We installed all the optimisers and panels as planned and switched the system on and found only 6vdc.

We tested the 4 panels and read 4vdc. We tested the 2 panels and read 2vdc.

When we tried the 8 panels, we couldn't get anything. We tested each optimiser individually and each read 1vdc but when they were all connected together, the result was zero.

We are unable to pair them. Is this because there are less than 8 optimisers visible to the inverter?

We plan to remove all 8 panels and rebuild the loop one panel and optimiser at a time, testing the loop after each addition.

Anybody had a similar scenario or any ideas as to the possible cause, and or a quick solution?

Check your positives and negatives if you have run extensions from one side of the roof to the other

(make sure you have the correct MC4's on the right terminals)
