Could any one let me know what code to issue for a fitting which is not IP rated,

If it is in a bathroom I would give it a Code 2 (requires improvement)

A lack of IP rating would not necessarily put anyone in immediate danger (unless you find further fault with the fitting) depends also how accessable the fitting is, is it in a public area? (Commercial)

Hi,
I would say code 4 (does not comply with the current issue of BS7671), that although the installation is NOT unsafe, careful consideration should be given to the benefits of improving the installation.

But Shiva, read the threads by Notsosmart and Bugsy, as they point out important issues as well.
hope this is of some help,

Sav
P.S Is it true that as from next year the Periodic is changing, as in the codes and insperction ????

Bit like the RCD isnt it ,people sell you an RCD for your lawn mower hedge trimmers strimmers why cause they wont work if you cut the cable because they are two core and no earth !!! ..........there must be some jobs in basket weaving .... not that as well well have to carry out a risk assesment and method statement for the risk of splinters

opps ranting sorry guys

I'm pretty sure that an RCD works on the balance between the current going out and back into the device, so an earth is not necessarily required. Any difference of 30mA between the outgoing to the incoming will tell the device that that current is going somewhere, which would possibly be through your fine self and then to earth, and thus trip.

When you cut the cable, you are dead shorting the live and neutral
The rcd will not recognise this because balance is maintained
The overcurrent device will protect this type of situation

If a person touches a live conductor of an extension lead or mower and conducts part of the current to earth through themselves, an imbalance will occur and will be sensed by the Rcd,no earth is required, you are the path and you are protected without an earth present

Exactly! :)
