Have been given a fitting by a customer (which she bought from Argos) to replace her external wall light by the front door. Rating is IP44. I've checked the IP Codes in the Regs & deems this would be OK for external. Just wondering if I need to go up to IP65 from a sense point of view seeing as it's mounted directly on the external wall exposed to elements...

IP44 is adequate. make sure cable has a drip loop though.

As Telectrix says they are suitable (But Just)
They are often reffered to as splashproof, so its really down to how aggressive the water penetration is likely to be. I have been to sites with IP44 ratings and found water ingress as occured sometimes due to poor after sealing of fixings and cable entries but sometimes not.
If possible a small drainage hole at the bottom of the fitting can prove usefull.

i always drill a small drain hole in the bottom of adaptable boxes, and dress the connections towards the top.
