I'm fitting a 100mA RCD to a TT system (domestic) to comply with the regs. Is it acceptable to fit a 100mA RCD as a main switch in a CU?

The original set-up was a stand alone mini CU with a 100mA RCD which in turn fed the main CU. The problem being maintaining the IP4X top surface rating on the stand alone 100mA RCD

OK hard hat on. I thought that the CU was only required to be IP2X, although could be wrong. What is the main CU set up? If it has the correct 30ma RCD protection/seperation etc I would put a "S" type or time delay 100ma RCD as the main switch.

Have a look at reg 531.4.1 it should help.

As for IP4X your correct the top of the CU should comply with this!

Have you 30mA RCD 's upstream and if so I would be fitting a S or Time delayed 100mA RCD to provide discrimination!

Slap some sealant over the top of the standalone box, IP4X job done. Only needs to prevent 0.1kg of force.
So long as you have the required 30mA protection for the appropriate circuits a 100mA main switch is OK.

IMO I would make sure the main swicth is a S or time delayed RCD if you have a 17th edition board upstream as if a fault developes on any of your RCD ccts you could find the main switch tripping out cutting power to the entire building if its not !
