IR with Di-Log MFT

Hi all,

Trainee spark here so I expect this is a 'user error' issue.

I bought a Di-Log MFT a few months ago when I started workign as a mate/apprentice. I was using it today to test a new board I'd put in. All went well until I wanted to get my IR's @ 500v - the screen just turns red and the word FUSE is displayed and I can't perform the test.

I assumed I'd blown the 1.6a fuse in the back of the unit but changed this and it made no difference (and it tested OK for continuity).

Also wasn't able to perform a Zs up at a light fitting because the GS38 probe tips wouldn't let me get near the conductors! Think I'll be making some 'adjustments' there!

Did you try it on another circuit after that or a spare (new) piece of cable? You can buy attachments for testing at light fittings, kewtech light mate/socket & see, and just use a croc clip to the cpc terminals...

check and see if the leads are fused.

Did you by any chance try and test IRNwith the power still on? it's been known.

Yes, tried it on other circuits - same result.

Yes, I'd wondered about the light fitting attachements but I'd still need to remove the ceiling rose to get at CPC so didn't really see any time saving advantage there. But would certainly be better than not being able to perform test at all!

It's entirely possible that I would do that! But my boss had a go too and he got the same result. He's an experienced spark - so obviouly infallible! I might have to delicately ask him if this might have been the issue!

Now, there's a novel idea! I'll dig it out, but seem to remember it was a fairly flimsy affair.

you need arms like a octopus when you testing .

I have a dialog. When the screen turns red its usually because voltage is detected on the circuit. Mine has never said fuse though..
They are quite sensitive meters and will pick up capacitive inductance while carrying out IR testing, I just leave my probes on until the voltage disappears before carrying on with IR testing the next circuit.
