Ok, so I come back from walking the dogs this morning and she's reset the rcd 4 times cos it goes every time she plugs the iron in.

I get the megger out and get nothing L-N, nothing N-E and only 0.01 M ohms L-E. Something like that anyway.

Did I do the right thing? I tested across the pins of the plug top.

Anyway, sent her out with the plastic money and she came back with a new phillips half price from comet.

Cheers lads, yeah moulded plug. Stuff so cheap these days, nothing gets repaired. Just wanted to make sure the iron WAS knackered before sending her out. would've been nice to be able to identify the xact component, but for £39.99? New Iron methinks and a trip to the civic amenities site.
