Discuss Is 0ne 30mA RCD acceptable to cover all circuits in 3 bed semi - any reccomendations in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net
Hi , Im looking at doing a rewire on a small 3-bed semi. Im pretty much upon the current regs e.t.c. and am aware of the need to prevent complete loss of lighting (i.e upstairs and downstairs) in the event of an RCD tripping e.t.c
However as apparantly there is a need to protect all cabling installed less than 50mm deep in walls e.t.c. i understand both upstairs / downstairs lighting circuits must have the RCD protection.
Therefore my question is would it be acceptable in a small house to install a 30mA RCD Incomer and protect all circuits after this with MCB's rather than going to the expense of either multiple RCD's or RCBO's , after all it is only a small property and i noticed that my proffesionally wired parents two bed semi is wired this way (one 30mA RCD protecting all circuits)
Also if the property was not residential i.e a small shop how would this affect the requirements for RCD Protection

RCBO's to allow for discrimination. You can't have just one RCD covering all of of the circuits, your parents consumer unit was incorrectly configured.

Without being rude your not clued up on the current reg's
Dual RCD , Mains Isolator lighting split between the two rcd's or complete rcbo's dedicated circuit for smokes etc etc

Its not just the cost bud, Its against regs. You have to provide some sort of discrimination.
ps 10 way twin rcd Hagar board 38 quid plus ÂŁ1.50 a breaker at CEF for us. Max 53 quid all in!!
RCBO's are the ideal solution but lets face it, 90% of people just dont wanna pay for them!

Wylex 10 way dual split, inc breakers and change out of ÂŁ65.00 on the net delivered to your doorstep. Pre assembled so no p*****g about putting it together. Also possible to configure it to have 1st way next to main switch non RCD so you can drop a RCBO in for your smokes.............cheap as chips, fully compliant and enough left to pay for sandwiches, beer and smokes
If you read a bit futher if the installation is under the supervision of a comitent or trained person then rcds are optional, so lock your door and your still covered. hehe
Correct & you would by using either rcbo's for every circuit or by using a dual rcd cu.
As for the OP it's not a good idea to have a single rcd covering the whole property.......in fact it's a right royal pain in the backside (mine was untill i re-wired & changed the cu)
Re: Is 0ne 30mA RCD acceptable to cover all circuits in 3 bed semi - any reccomendati
Is it against regs though? Reason for question is I have just done new build install where builders supplied materials including Rcd main switch consumer unit!!
Re: Is 0ne 30mA RCD acceptable to cover all circuits in 3 bed semi - any reccomendati
seriously its a pretty grey area...!! the regs give you too many reasons o use a RCD i.e cables less that 50mm, competent persons, blah blah blah, but if your customer supplied the materials and said thats what they want what can you do...!!
the circuits are RCD
ok you dont hve discrimination as per the regs but what do you do!!! if that the case why do wholesalers still sell 12 way CU with one rcd..???

The wholesalers can sell what they want to they want it is up to the customer to decide what to install. It is because of this the cowboys get the cheepest and chuck it in. have a look at a well known DIY shop and see whet they sell to anyone without any guidelines.
You are correct, but you would install one at a greater rating than 30Ma as the incommer and individual ones of a lesser rating for your circuits.
