Hi all,

I am 17th Edition trained (although I've been out of the industry for a few years.) Looking to sit 18th Edition course and exam to get back into it.

I'm wondering though do I really need the new BS7671? I know the test is open book, but I'm trying to see if the £80 something is worth it, or if I could get by just buying the new On-Site Guide which comes in at about £25.

I still have a copy of BS7671 from 17th Edition, I've read there aren't that many changes to 18th though. Is this IET looking to make money or would you say it's worth it?

Appreciate any observations

TJ

TL;DR
Spend £80+ of Brown BS7671 or just ~£25 on the On-Site Guide?
Yes. Quite apart from the large number of changes and how essential it is to have the latest version, your efficiency in the exam will be severely hampered if you aren't used to how the key bits look and whereabouts on the page they are in the latest copy.
Personally I'd save the £25 and spend the £80.
It's not as if you won't need it anyway afterwards.

Would you ask the same question of the highway code and a driving test? Course you wouldn't.

Get the book, digest and understand; yes it's still got parts and appendices you're familar with BUT information in those parts and appendices has been severally updated so you risk not knowing the recent changes; Parts 4, 5, 6 have been greatly improved and some appendices revamped/removed.
