rossiboy

I have just finished my 3 years 2330 and im going to do my AM2, NVQ3 and 2391 Testing and inspection.

But since working in the trade it annoys me when someone does there part P and thinks there a electrician!!! I recently put up a job offer and people applyin had 17th edition!! thats it!!!

I infurates me that some of us. do time served and go through the correct college procedures and people with pointless qualifications are getting jobs!!!!

Yes i know i wasn't aiming this on offending anyone or causing mass riot! Just sometimes i feel im training for something that in the long run will be nothing. But all i can say is i enjoy it and hopefully finish all my course soon.

Im with u on that rossi boy, im in the exact same boat as u mate. Done 2330, nvq level 2 & 3, AM2, 17th edition and am about to do my 2391 in about two weeks.

But every single qualification is just given to you anyway, its so easy to get the quals. Not once have I ever felt REALLY proud to have passed any exam. Apart from the 2391 which im told u actually do need to know what your doing and its a closed book written exam.

I've come across loads of sparkies with all the qualifications under the sun but when u actually work with em they are terrible. So what I'm trying to say here is that all the exams do is absolutely nothing apart from give you a peice of paper!

It's all down to the apprenticeship you get in the first place, ive been working with a college mate that i took to an industrial job and he was lost, and i mean absolutely lost because he had been house bashing for the last 4 years. So anything bigger than a 10mm t+e or 6mm swa for a garage supply he was shakin in his boots. He has exactly the same quals as me but I definetly would not class him as competant.

So qualifications or no qualifications you simply just cannot base judgement on that.

Got all the qualification apprenticeship Done 2330, nvq level 2 & 3, AM2, 17th edition and my 2391 But i am still learning . What about when the Govement stop the 2330 in a few years what about the kid can,t get apprenticeship How does he get trained up

I have just finished my 2330 level 3. Got my 17th next month.
I did mine on a home learning course. In a way I wished I had gone to college a few nigts a week. The support I recieved was useless, lucky for me I have a few mates who are sparks so have been able to ask them anything I was / am unsure about, and now here too which is awesome! I didn't find the exams or practical assessments hard and felt it was a bit to easy. There was a lot of basic stuff not covered as well I felt.
Doing a new install I feel 'competent' doing. But having no experience, I wouldn't feel to confident going to someones house and ripping up floor boards and pulling apart walls and stuff.
I just lack experience.

Some of people on the course, who where passing, where complete idiots. I believe doing the course helps you more, but not necessary makes you a better electrician then say, someone who's been doing it for many years with no qualifications.

I managed to become an engineer without doing a degree, just on my years experience as being a technician and doing a lot of the engineers work. I have worked along side new grads who dont have a clue on how to use test equipment. So, it's not always what qualifications you have, it's what you know yourself and what you can do.

Easy day, feet up eating a sandwich with a nice cup of tea:D
Anyway, back to subject.
I have always put importance on qualifications, and always will.Whilst they are not and never will be a substitute for experiance, you have to accept we are in a technical trade and as such theoretical knowledge go hand in hand with practical experiance.
If you combine the two you have the ingrediants to make a good electrician.
Like any trade its also about competance and pride in what your doing. As far as quick learn courses are concerned they have very limited application and are only there for the most basic electrical works.
To sum up there is and never will be a substitute for good qualifications and time served experiance, it's what opens doors in the long term scheme of things. Take pride in what you do and always be ready to learn something new no matter how old you are .
Keep the faith.;)

I have been a spark for 19 years (exam pass date). I had a apprent. within a company but the spark that taught me was one of those that said 'why should i train you and then later on you would then replace me' his fav saying was 'A farmer does not teach another farmer to grow prize marrows' It worked for me, i watched and learned. Experiance is better then paper! but now im going to have to do the 60 question update and im bricking it ! i know my job but now'er days you need the paper to prove it.
God help us!

It's the ones that don't brick it that need to worry Ash.:)
You have experiance on your side. If it makes you feel better I started in this game in 1972 and i will always be learning. Plenty of paperwork in my attic, some of it's the new stuff and some of it's fading.
Just look at the paperwork as keys to other doors, trust me it helps to have those quals more so now than ever. Like I said, keep the faith and have confidence in your ability's ;)
