I'm just looking at potentially setting up on my own and I need to register for part p, now I think im going with niceic ( I know this could be a contentious issue!).
my question is... Is it it worth going for 'approved contractor' status or just stick with domestic installer subs?? From what i understand I don't need to be registered with anyone to carry out commercial and industrial work?? Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Ben

you would need approved contractor status with either niceic or eca to quote for industrial work where approved contractor was required by client, which in most cases, you'll find that it is.

Ok thanks, I'm thinking of going domestic first then transferring to approved in a few months just because of the cost factor initially. The NIC had said similar but it's nice to hear it from some body independent!

don't just blindly follow niceic, though. see what eca/elecsa has to offer and then decide on your options.

I think that you might have an issue registering with NIC at all if you have less than a years' notified jobs to show them. Might be different now, but that was the case when I first registered with Elecsa.

I have the same problem.
I will be more commercial and industrial biased and want to register as an approved contractor because of this but for obvious reasons I won't have any jobs to show until I leave my current employer and start my own work. Trouble is if I have to register as a domestic installer first all, business cards, letter heads etc that carry for example the NICEIC domestic installer logo will have to be changed when upgrading to approved which is a pain and costly.
Does anyone know whether or not you can register as approved and be able to use that particular logo until you have the 5 jobs needed to show an assessor? Or would it be just easier to register as a DI and cert any commercial/industrial jobs using model forms until such time I can register as approved?
