hi everybody , my boss is sending me on a solar panel installers course next week .i am a qualified spark with the 2391 certificate will i find the course hard or easy, please let me know your views thanks paul

Hi Paul,

We are re a supplier of Solar PV products and work very closely with various training centres. The course is very simple but some are better than others. The better courses allow you to work on proper bracketry but the majority of the course is identifying and working with the differnet components and how they fit into the system.

If you are doing the course with the NIEIC please have a look at this link for further information : NICEIC | Training | Environmental | Solar Photovoltaic (PV)

Hope it helps

What are the prices like? would it be usefull for some one looking to DIY it? or is it really best left to professionals?

the course only covers the mechanics of the installation process. IN order to do your own installation and certify it you would also need to be MCS registered, go through the process to obtain that including the required training, making up of a process manual and associated documentation (3 thick files in my case) assessments and membership of REAL, ELECSA or NICEIC or the like and Gemserve. You would need to be able to prove competence in the field, find a Part P electrician and be able to handle the roofing side, which would mean a working at height ticket.
You would be looking at about 6 months and ten grand to do all that and cover the cost of your install. Doing the course only equips you with the basics, you would still need some time with an experienced installer to learn the ropes, if you can find one willing to teach you, before being let loose on your own.

So, now do you see why you need to pay a professional, and why they charge what they do?
It is most certainly not a 'DIY job'!!

haha thank you I didn't know whether PV fitting was becoming more available to the layman. It also explains why engineers deserve the money they get... Looks like ill have to keep saving up the pennies.
