As most sparks will know that our trade is well and truely knackered and the good days off being a spark and making good money and having plenty of work are now and truely gone.
When I speak to other trades and other people I keep in touch with from around the country they all say the same lack of work and wages are being driven down. And the rise in the power of the agencies being used by companies now makes all jobs temp and short term now. With the economy of this country being in a bad state and not picking up in the near future it will only get worse for the next couple of years.
When the turnaround in the economy happens and the country is busy again don't fool yourself into thinking that you will get a secure books in job as the companies will always use the agencies from now on :mad:And that means below the rate and day to day working I can't speak for others but I don't want to live like this.Strugging to get work every week to pay the bills and a holiday is a pipe dream.
Our standard of living is going downhill rapidly every year and soon the Eastern European countries will have a better standard of living than us.
If anyone agrees or disagrees with what I think please share your thoughs on this subject with us

It must be so hard for you guys, trying to find work each day. It hard enough trying find work, but then you get customers wanting it for virtually free. Its not something I could like to do. I work in industrial eng for the past 20 odd years, and have seen it dwindle away. The company I work for used to employ 1,400 people. We no longer have a shop floor, all the manufacturing gone abroad, and there are about 120 people working here now. Times are hard mate, but it sounds like you have having it a lot harder than me. We just have to keep plodding on, to pay for the bills, mortgage, food, cloths for the kids....... it goes on.

it's been on the downhill slide ever since they ganged up on Thatcher because of her stance on europe. now look at the mess they've got us into.

It wont get any better till someone has the balls to shut the door.

Sorry bugger off England is shut. Go back from whence you came. But everyone in charge has to pander to the human rights brigade, and be politically correct.

Well give me the job, cos i would sort it out, and if the PC brigade dont like it, then they are more than welcome to sod off as well.

Enough said, I am starting to go off on one, and this forum is not the place.

Cheers........Howard

Only reason its nackered is.... too many unqualified sparks being aloud to work on premises and also no money in the pockets of those needing upgrades etc.

Its because all the dross has come here and taken the jobs, that our own people cant get work, and so have no cash to spend, and when they have, they spend it paying the dross to do the work. Its the old vicious circle thing again.

we just had this bloody census. why didn't they do as when jesus was born. everbody back to their place of birth.

Far too many poles, latvians, lithuainains etc and now the irish economy is up the creek we have loads of irish tradesmen. Now I have nothing against any of these people but surely we need a system that allows us to repatriate these groups of workers when the number of unemployed reaches a certain level.Rumours of large numbers of foreign tradesmen working on the olympic sites and well qualified eastern europeans willing to take low paid jobs that could be taken up by youngsters leaving school.labour have a lot to answer for.bring back maggie.

It was on a downward spiral as soon firms started using electricians mates. Should be just electricians and apprentices on jobs.

This has always been a problem in England but it has turned into a problem in Scotland as well, there are jobs with two or three sparks on then and ten labourers, the numbers add up to them doing the installation work.Saving the company on wages, producing bad workmanship and putting sparks out of a job.

The birth of the 714 joiner in the Eighties put alot of joiners out of work and most of them being forced to go self employed and work for a price, and the amount of apprentice joiners has dwindled sinse then.
The same is happening to the sparkys trade now, everton wants you to work for £12 an hour CIS and the odd week hear and there, most people can't live like this and need something steady.
I was offered two days work from an agency today,it was sixty miles away for £12 an hour,I want to work but it was not worth my while taking this job as with about £20 a day petrol and a £25 fee to a payment company as well means out of a top line of £192 I am putting out £65 and then waiting a week and a half to hopefully get paid plus any tax they take off me.The sums just don't add up and to make it worse this was for a SJIB member company.
I am better of getting a job in a warehouse two miles down the road that is books in.
