egginyourface

I did a small job for someone in earlier this year in march and issued receipt on completion. They called me today and told me they had lost receipt and asked if i could send it again and to change the date on the receipt and say the money was received during this tax year

is this legal?

Are you prepared to do what they're asking?

I'd be telling them that you can only certify the work you did on the date you did it.

I'm surprised to see a question like this to be honest.

it's no big deal. if you did the job in march, it's quite likely that you would have been paid in april.only problem is if they submit both the new invoice and the "lost one " to hmrc. if you do send them an april dated invoice be sure to mark it "duplicate"

photocopy your copy and send it to them (your choice but if its a customer you get alot from prob just do it for good customer relations otherwise as its prob innocent and they just want to put it against the business but have lost/forgot it untill now and also if there hasnt been a prob with another receipts, but if its a one off just forward them a copy of yours, thats just me though others will disagree

If it's for insurance purposes then I would just issue a copy of the original. If they are asking for a new date then there is a possibility that your document (with it's new date) could be used to defraud the insurance company.

Edit: IE they may not have had a policy at the time of the original changes

It might be that they want to offset the cost against Tax, and have already submitted their figures for last year.
Now they've realised that they don't have your receipt, and want to put it in their books for this year.
Tell them to just put it down as an adjustment.
