Is this Voltage Detector the same as the Megger one but 3.5x less the price? | on ElectriciansForums

Discuss Is this Voltage Detector the same as the Megger one but 3.5x less the price? in the Electrical Tools and Products area at ElectriciansForums.net

dont know it certainly looks the same as one I got from Neweys wasnt much more than ÂŁ8 i think works well for "Counting " on PIRs DO NOT Rely on this they should ONLY be used as an indication voltage may be present NOT that voltage isNOT present that should ALWAYS be checked with test lamps

The piece of instrumentation you linked is similar to the megger VF voltage tester in so much as I wouldn't allow either of them on one of my sites. :)

There the devils work and will probably end up killing you one day !
Just go the extra mile and get something you can trust , every time .

Joking aside Rampage these types of test equipment are hit and miss at best. You say it wouldn't be used as a sole means of proof of disconnection but the temptation is always there and one day you're up a set of step ladders and you forgot to grab your multimeter.....before you know it you take one chance, one time just using the proximity tester and wallop.

I wasn't joking earlier when I said I don't allow them on my sites and I would seriously urge you not to get into the habit of using these types of devices.

Marvo,
They have their uses for indicating the POSSIBLE presence of voltage on in use circuits......

With respect, surely this should be the default assumption of any wire or cable anyway.
I've had the same arguments with the guys that work for me and I still don't see any value in a piece of test equipment that indicates (not even accurately) there may possibly be voltage.

Like I said it's just too tempting to rely on it for the wrong thing one day if you have one, it's just human nature.I honestly consider them an unnecessary risk.

The only real use I have found is when you have say loads of sheathed but not armoured cables laying around and you are trying to follow a cable from point to point with no labelling, then you can possibly shut all other supplies down from the board and find the offending cable and follow it with the non contact indicator.
Please remember however, that they are just a glorified neon.
There are experiments which are safe to prove this available! ;)
