Issues with a lifter.....

So calling on some on your experiences, we had a lifter on hire, brand new, since it's gone back they recon there is £1k worth of damage to it. They were supposed to uplift it last Monday but didn't until tues when I wasn't there. They didn't identify any damage before it left site and I have 2 witnesses that will vouch it was fine when it left.

Anyone had anything similar?

You should ask for photos of the damage to the lifter while it was still on site and before it was loaded onto the truck.

Had it many times with hire companies.

The last time was for a compressor supposedly damaged. Phoned them up to query it and ask for photographs so I could compare them to ours. “Eeerrm well, er…..” My parting shot was asking if they had the phone number of one of their rivals. I’d gone though our hire list, we had 20+ items of theirs on hire at that time. A tidy chunk of income to loose if they pushed the matter.

Ask for proof,and use their own terms of hire against them.Most hire companies state in their terms that equipment should be inspected by hirer at start of hire and any defects or damage reported immediately,so if their driver came to collect said machine and failed to notice any damage,and bring it to the attention of someone on site then that's their problem.For that kind of money it's hardly likely to be something easily missed is it? I suppose it would be different if we were talking the hire of a power tool and you'd burned the motor out and just handed it back,but not in this case.Tell them that as far as you are concerned the machine left site in good order,end of.

Thanks for the advice guys, they have pictures of the alleged damage but not before it left site. At no point was any damage recorded and a signature obtained before the machine left site. It's a Genie GR20, a little mast lifter. They are now planning to do a site visit next week to look for damage to the building that matches the damage to the lifter, of which there's none, and as it's a school I have two caretakers that can vouch it was fine when it left the school.

have a look around the local low bridges. see if there's paint matching the lifter. that'll prove it was their transport done it. lol.

I always thought the lifters had insurance and if damage was caused by the person hiring the lifter they paid the excess which is usually 250 quid, that said if your 100% positive you did not cause the damage then you have nothing to worry about.

Pass it to your insurers and let them fight it incase it all becomes mucky.

As above, they should of got a signature and pics of the damage before leaving site.

But Just for a funny story I was involved with some MEWP damage once, Allbeit not directly.
Me and a coleague were doing some work on the outside of a building with a 90ft Cherry picker, One of the big 4x4 all terrain ones.
Anyways we had alot of rain and the ground was soft so we were a little aprehensive over driving it on the grass.
We were told it would be ok so went for it.
I was playing banksman, Got half way accross the grass all going well when we hit a really soft bit and the one tyre sank pretty much instantly!
Well to cut a long (but amusing) story short it ended up stuck and sank right down the to axel, The biggest issue was the wheel the other side was on a concrete pad so the whole lifter went on a angle, Bent the axel and knackered up the wheel amongst other things.
Wish I still had the pics as it was a sight to behold I tell ya!
Cant remember how much the repair bill was either but it was pretty damn expensive!

Hi dude,VERY familiar with the access job,and i know those machines, If the damage looks like overloading,bent drive hubs,bent hand rails,bucket etc,check the transport arrangements they used. Was it their own or otherwise? Loading and securing on a trailer or Brimec/low loader,can do a LOT of damage,straps and sylvesters can bend allsorts,companies try to do drops and collections sequentially,and squeezing them on a full wagon can put years on them. I have done insurance inspections for Genie,JLG,Snorkel,Versalift and most of the other marques,and damage which looked like cladders had tried to lift 1000KGs of sheets on a roof,can turn out to be exuberant use of a chain binder or the bucket of a JCB,transported on the same truck,slowly dropping on to the MEWP. Or,on one occasion,a job was completed on site,hire company rang to collect machine,keys left in MEWP,contractors leave,and bored operatives on site whizz round car park in afternoon break till machine goes down interceptor grid hatch,and turns over. Office staff and brew girls all push it upright,and nothing mentioned till CCTV inspected...That claim went south due to hirers "failure to ensure un-trained operatives had no access to machine"...yeh,i know...irate:
