When I started electrical contracting the NIC-EIC were a charity and a well respectected body being an NIC-EIC approved contractor gave you status ( our inspecting engineer - Mr Waterhouse - now retired - had an uncanny habit of finding the worst bit of an installation by just sniffing the air ) They then became a business , lots of changes ( start of the slope )
today I discovered they have been taken over by an international certification company so from now on it will all be about money , sod the standards pay us enough and your in

Exactly, just because NICEIC are by a massive margin, the largest and most familiar scheme provider, they are often the convenient target.

Yes, things have changed but they wouldn't have survived without changing to a more commercially-minded operation and one spin-off from that is the excellent publishing division.

They're all in it for the dollars, that I do believe!
