I applied for a jib card with the following Quals, 2391 I+T 2381 16th ed, 2360 parts 1+2, AND C Course, but when my card arrived, it says trainee all over it. Surely this cannot be correct?? I rang up and they just said i havent got nvq3 and pretty much hung up the phone. could some one clarify cos i've read on other posts than the parts one and 2 are nvq3 equivalent. More to the point, i consider myself at least qualified!!!!???

It was a few years back now but I had the same experiance. It appears that the grading system requires NVQ3 but and its a big but,If you have been around long enough then you would have qualified out long before the NVQ system even existed.
I wrote to them explaining the above along with copies of all certificates and also pointed out that NVQ3 is basically documented proof of practical experiance.
Common sense would support that an active time served electrician in the field for more than 30 years along with supporting certificates and any updates, would confirm this anyway:confused:

The reply took a little while but it went before an enqiury board and a nice shiny gold approved electrician card came back:D. So take heart write to them, rather than phone, and you should get a common sense response.

got mine the other day. only been qualified less than 6 months, with nvq, 2330. i thought mine would say 'improver' because i havent got much qualified experience, but it says 'electrician' i'm not complaining!

you might find jib will not now issue approved status to contract workers only to cardies
they will state on your card your catagories but not give you a status
it seems with the jib any one qualified before 1991 is a numpty
all they are intrested in is nvq`s never mind i have part 3 c&g and an onc there final parting shot to me when asking why my approved status was not on my card was you dont have nvq and we dont give it to contract workers!!!

I e-mailed them this

Dear JIB

I served my apprenticeship with the armed forces finishing in 2005 at the Royal School of Military Engineering in Chatham and gained the following qualifications:-

City and Guilds 2390 parts 1 & 2
City and Guilds 2360 C Course
City and Guilds 2381 16th Edition, wiring regs
City and Guilds 2391 Inspection and Testing
AM2 assessment

It was to my understanding after a phone call to the JIB that the apprenticeship the armed forces give is recognised by yourselves so I proceeded to apply for a card after doing the CSCS assessment.

I have recently recieved a JIB card with the grading, 'senior graded electrical trainee'. Having achieved above and beyond the qualifications to be graded as an electrician in that obtaining C Course and Inspection and Testing, it seems unfair to be graded as unqualified. Is it possible to review this application judiciously with a view to be graded as at least electrician status under these circumstances.

Yours Faithfully

Daniel Bruffell

I only e-mailed them yesterday, as of yet i've had no reply. Fingers crossed eh. I'm screwed otherwise.

Your right maybe everyone who cant get an apprenticeship should go flip burgers for a living. I would love to see the state of the industry after that one. People like you put prospective sparks off going into training because lets face it even if they go out and gain experience and become a top quality spark, there will always be the ones who will look down on them.

Russ after 16 years in the industry i have seen a few people who haven,t done a full apprenticeship who are very good sparks as well as some bad ones. mind you that can be said for the guys who did do a 5 year apprenticeship. I personally wouldnt make my mind up untill i had worked with them for a while. you may find the older guys who join the trade have a keen interest and are very willing to learn and dont mind taking advice or asking questions. it doesnt make them a bad spark quite the opposite i think it will make them better sparks!.
