Right as you probably know all the JIB titles have changed, again.

Part of me likes the masses of definitions, but my question relates to what do they mean?

One in particular.

Provisional electrician.

Can a provisional spark work on site unsupervised, or does he need to be watched like a trainee/'pprentice

Any ideas out there?

A provisional grade is just awaiting confirmation, that the requirements for that grade have been met.
As to whether someone would allow someone with a provisional grade to carry out the same duties as someone with the un-provisional grade, that would be up to the someone to decide.

A quick side question then. Who dictates that apprentices have to work under supervision?
As I understand things, the statutory requirements that apply to all workers contained in the current health and safety legislation, require any worker to be competent (have relevant training or qualifications) or be supervised when carrying out any work duty where a risk assessment would indicate a hazard.
There are particular requirements for young persons, which I believe apply up to the age of 19, or even in some legislation 21.
Here's a link for some more detailed information: The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

H&S may be the reason but it can also hide a multitude of moves to embed the JIB or in my case the SJIB if we dont look out we are going to over regulate or rugalate for the sake of mind it is not hard to work out time are hard and the registration companies and JIB types are basically doing a jobs worth in such a way that they cannot be done away the only thing is there will be a backlash when it is too late and people will work around it so in a sense we are making a joke of the very thing that we should be proud off with regards to standards and safety

Remember one company I worked we had a guy who was graded as an electrician(provisional) on his card, asked what that was about he said that he did not have any quals but the company had got him this grading only on the proviso that should he leave he would loose that grading and be graaded as a labourer

????hold on you are either a qualified electrician or you are an electricians mate full stop I would have thought the JIB would not hold themselves to ransom by issuing a provisional electrician card this does not add up for me.
