I've been offered a place on a training course - access2 City and Guilds. It costs £5500 which is paid by Barclays on a loan basis. I've been told I can complete it in 3 months and get papers. I'm wondering how valid this course is. Does anyone know what kind of qualification I'll really get and what job prospects I'll get at the end of it?

id be very wary m8 be careful plus work is very quiet just now everywhere, experienced electricians signing on the dole, thats how bad its become, even if you get your trade papers you might find it very difficult to find work especially if you have no experience behind you the state the country is in at the moment, it really isnae the time to be changing career, sorry to paint a bleak picture ad wait a while and see how the building trade recovers

Hi Jim and welcome to the forum:D.These courses are usually aimed at people who want to practice as domestic electrician's.Nothing can make up for experience in the field. There are so many different areas in the electrical industry.Just depends what you really want to do.I'm not trying to sound negative, but a lot of the people on here have served apprenticeships. There are so many companies offering you this and that, have they offered you a placement to gain experience.£5500 is a lot of money to fork out at the moment.Good luck anyway mate;)

Thanks, this helps.
I've been told that after successfully completing modules ,that i'll do at home ,I go to a centre for practical training, i think it's five days at a time after each block of modules is completed. The training centres too far to travel to so i've to pay for accomodation when i go there.
Unfortunately I'm, 19 - 20 next month so been told i'm too old to start an apprenticeship. Just trying to work out what other options i've got to becoming an electrician. Does anyone know of any valid courses? courses that give qualifactions that are going to be recognised and useful?

Hi Jim you are not too old to get an apprenticeship. I have just completed the first year of of a City and Guilds 2330 and 2 lads off that are not coming back next year because they have got apprenticeships, both 19. Regarding the course you are thinking about i can't possibly see how it could compare to a full time course with lecturers on hand to ask when you have problems plus a day a week in the workshop. Full time is three days a week so some of the lads have worked part time as well as doing the course - and if you have to pay for everything total cost is about £500 a lot less than five grand !
