Hi, I'm pretty new to the business and I've been asked to change out a Consumer Unit, I'm qualified to do the work but I'm a bit unsure how much to ask for the job. I would expect it to take about 2 days to fit and test without complications. Would appreciate some sensible advice. TIA

Hi, thanks for taking the time to reply. What I'm really interested in is how you've calculated your price and how long you would expect to spend doing the job including completing the EIC?
TIA, Kevin
tbh if you are capable of completing the testing and changing the cu then you will have a good idea of how long it should take. but the issues that may arise from faults any readings that may require more investigation will also have a bearing on the final price ie remidail works.

Hi, yes I am quite sure of how long it would take me to replace and test the cu, I've done a few already for friends and family, what I'm not sure of is how much to charge per hour, ie; what's currently the industry standard if you will, also, as frequently happens whilst replacing and testing other faults and items appear that need to be remedied but only become apparent as you go, so, how do I deal with this as going back to the customer to ask for more money seems to be a bit like taking the p***! I don't want to give the impression of being a cowboy, as I'm sure you'll understand.
Thanks for all your help.

first of all the quote needs to be laid out for price of consumer unit supply and change. you need to make them aware that you will be testing and inspecting the installation prior to this as it is a requirement and that if anything needs remidial work you will inform him/her before you undertake this.. nuisanse tripping of rcds, borrowed neutrals broken accsossories , if you change the board and they get the rcd tripping out every day it wont go down too well. also the need to certify the works the list goes on really but you do need to lay it out clearly to them or you will be lifting floor boards for a fault if there is one at your own expense if they dont pay
