Was on for a nice easy day, and home for 1pm. NOT.
Customer who i have just done loads and loads of work for rang me up. "You know those spotlights you put up for me on the landing, well every now and again there is a bang and it all goes off", Did the job on Wednesday. So i called back this afternoon. Reset RCD and MCB, and tried landing lights, no problems, working fine. Go out to van to get tools etc, and have a smoke, go back into house RCD and MCB tripped.
Started to investigate, IR test on 3 core to downstairs switch, all good, so move upstairs. Checked in loft that i hadn't done anything daft, nothing wrong. IR the black and red twin and earth switch cable. N-E 500 plus, N-L 500 plus, L-E 0.25Meg.
On closer inspection i noticed a piece of dildo rail had been fitted to the wall at top of door frame height, and heyho, there is a painted over nail hole directly above the switch. Ragged the dildo rail off, and 2 nails about 2 inch long straight into cable, chopped out the wall, put new switch cable in, and all is fine. rang the builder up to tell him want had happened, he is not too chuffed, and he's even less chuffed that i have stung him for £100, and he needs the plasterer and joiner back to fix the mess.
I wouldn't expect a professional joiner to stick a nail in a wall directly above a lightswitch.
Cheers...........Howard
