Hi all,
I'm an electrician working full time for a company and am thinking of going self employed.
Or at least fitting some private jobs in on evenings and weekends.

I've been looking into joining a competent person scheme but can't work out what qualifications I need.
I thought I would need 17th, 2395 and Part P.

Yet I just looked at a thread on here and it sounds like people are saying you don't need to take a Part P course.

Please can someone help me understand this.

What do I need as a minimum? I've been working for around 8 years now and know all I need to about testing etc.

Thanks for your help. Jon.

First thing you need to do is check your employment T's & C's to see if your current employer will allow you;
a, to run another business whilst an employee
b, run an electrical business whilst an employee.

My employers strictly forbid any business which creates a conflict of interest.
I've set up my own business anyway as over the next year or so I intend to start working for myself and need to build a reputation/client base before I can make the move.
I know it's not ideal but provided I don't poach clients and keep the two separate I can't foresee any problems.
I have registered with a scheme provider as provided I can cover my costs to run the business then that suits me, it's building my reputation is the most important thing for now.
Guess it is down to you whether you register, but considering what it costs to inform bc you would only have to do 3-4 notifiable jobs to break even.
