when joining T&E cable with butt connectors do you have to use heat shrink on the joints or not?

butt connecters are usually coated in plastic anyway i usually just tape them.

Thanks for reply, so when you strip off outer grey sheathing and have just the insulation you connect the cable and then tape over, so you just have insulation tape over the conductor insulation and the butt connectors?

crimp them then i usually do if 1.5mm or 2.5mm but i see that your supposed to heat shrink over them.
what do you mean by grey sheathing ?
what size cable?

The heat shrink is required in order to return the cable to it's original condition ie double insulated.
PVC tape is not adequate as this breaks down over time.
If you enclose the connectors in a pattress with cover or similar enclosure then you will not need the heatshrink.

Use wago connectors instead roviding of course the joint are in an enclosure

I no longer use crimps the Wagos are far superior , and if you extend them in a piece of trunking there is no need for tape or heatshrink

Pliers for twisting the bare copper together, and some selotape wrapped around, is still the most widely used method by diy folks
Crimps and heatshrink for me,though I will confess that I haven't even seen what a wago creature is,so I may not be suitable to make the comparison

Those wagos sound more like iimmigrants from Mexico or such
