I was installing some downlighters yesterday, and noted a joint in a 10mm tw&e cable. It's the supply for the house electric cooker. Someone has used a 30amp joint box, to break into the cable to supply another point. The internal wires are exposed outside of the jb. Now clearly I can't leave this and bought it to the attention of the customer. The joint is unaccessible under the floor boards. Seems little option of rewiring, due to floor coverings and distance from consumer unit.

My intension was to replace the joint. I can disconnect the spur cable, to return the cable to an end to end joint. It may be that this cable was not cut, and is still continuous. However, if it is I would use butt crimps and heat sleeving. The issue is the current jb is underneath some heating pipes with no cable slack, so the space is limited for some sort of plastic adaptable box (not mention ratchet crimper!). Something like this;

60 Amp 3 Terminal Junction Box - White

(without the terminals) would be ideal. Anybody with suggestions?

I realise this might not be the answer you're looking for - but I would be looking to rewire. Cannot you find an alternative route for cable, there usually is one if you look hard enough.

If the cable is continuous, and it is a big IF lol, leccy tape each seperate exposed line and neutral, then SA tape them, then SA tape the whole lot.

If all you want is a fairly slim box, how about a pvc surface box, single or double, with a blanking plate? Easier to notch out for the cable than a normal surface box.

Thanks for your replies chaps. Rewire is not an option, fairly large house and the joint is above the kitchen near the end of the cable run and as I said, with various floor coverings. Definitely going to crimp if the cable was broken, but was just looking for a slim line box to fit under the pipes and also to offer under the cable and screw on a lid after jointing. Also liked this box as it has cable retention. Popping down the wholesallers this afternoon to see what the've got. Gonna have to get a new crimper, as mines too big!
