Hi all, with majority of new builds adopting loop at the switch for residential lighting circuits these days, am wondering if any one still bothers with junction boxes in the roof space these days?

Haven't bothered with junction boxes in roof spaces for close to fifty years. As soon as three (four) terminal ceiling roses became available, I started using them as intended, with the loop to the rose, and in the last twenty years have transitioned to loop at the switch for 'simple' light circuits.
The only junction boxes I use for lighting circuits are for rooms with multiple lamp fittings and interacting switches, where I take, maybe, twenty cables or so to a readily accessible multi terminal junction box, clearly labelled and with circuit diagram enclosed.

Never use a JB in the loft / roof anymore unless its a repair job and all I have on me is an old JB.
All new circuits its at the switch or maybe 3 plate at the rose if its a sinple pendant

OP is in Oz.... seems much like UK in this respect.

Shouldn't be any JB's in new builds at all these days. If there is one, it should be accessible for maintenance.... not under a tiled floor in a bathroom, or buried behind drywall.
WAGO (tm) or other "maintenance free" connectors are available, but i still wouldn't deliberately make a JB impossible to get to.
