I am interested to know who uses what type of junction boxes for installation of downlighters and the like.
Now I was under the impression that we were now using boxes like the J501 so that the cables were clamped if the junction box was not screwed down and the cables fixed by a clip.
I had my annual assessment yesterday and when asked how we had connected the downlighters I mentioned that we had used this type to comply and his reply was that they were unnecessary.
a couple of weeks ago when I called into CEF in Milton Keynes, they don't keep them because nobody uses them according to CEF.
If you look at the Ashley (I think) leaflet that is in most wholesalers they say you need them with clamps to comply.

Over to you boys

Oh and by the way, I did ring the ECA and they say they should be used to comply

The IEE Wiring Regulations state that terminals shall not be subject to undue stress,
i.e. taking weight of cables or fittings.
Currently a high proportion of Junction Boxes are installed behind Downlighters or
decorative light fittings, where moving the Junction Box in to position after wiring
could cause stress on the terminations.

With the NEW Ashley J501 Junction Box, these obstacles can be overcome.

Ashley can provide a quick and easy means of connecting fixed wiring to flexible cables of downlighter fittings based on 3 main benefits:

1. Easy to use
2. Wide application suitability
3. Compliance with latest regulations

These comply in regards to joining solid core conductors ( T&E ) to stranded core conductors ( flex ). Not possible with a conventional junction box.

The CHOC block is also an alternative in which you put a cut-down strip of connector block.
