Hi guys, just a quick one.

Customer of mine has a key meter. He has received a letter from British Gas requesting that they undertake a visual safety check of the meter.
Obviously they have a right to but it seems a bit odd to me. I haven't heard of this before has anybody else?

Thanks in advance.
Steve.

Yeah, i read it on swalecs website that you can submit meter readings yourself but they will want to see it themselves at least every 2 years

they just want to see that he's not fiddling. make sure he puts it back to normal before they come.

they can come whenever they please , they have given written notice ,

curious ? why is it a problem have you rigged it

now a british gas safety check rings a bell. it's either that someone has buubled him for fiddling, or they will say they can't see an earth bond ( coz. it's where it should be, inside the property and the meter's outside), and advise him that his house will blow up on tuesday.

I'd just tell them to go and screw themselves.
When I lived in London in 80s, we spent so much cash on beer that the gas meter was turned around.
About 4 years in, we realised that the reading was lower than when we moved in. Meter back the right way, everything on full blast for 24 hours and a couple of weeks.
Hottest summer I ever had.

There is some statutory right on their part to see it every 2 years, to the extreme being able in theory to get permission to break & enter if need be.

Nope,no boom, just a pleasant bushy orange plume (like an airfix model oil rig flare) But small leak to subfloor over a couple of weeks = BOOM. Dangerous thing gas, wonder why they certify some people to work on it who don't know...:83:
