Just a quick rant for you lot.

I'm working part time at the mo doing maintenance for a nursing home. Its only 20 hrs a week but its regular. I've stayed self employed and have ads all over the place. The only thing I'm worried about is, "Is being an electrician like riding a bike", you never forget what you've learned. I have my
C & G 2330 lvl 2 & 3, C & G 2382 and C & G 2391, but i'm affraid if I dont dont get alot of work, ill forget all ive learned.

I keep visiting this site, just to refresh my memory and I have found that i Know the answer to most of the questions asked but I dont want to give an answer just incase i'm wrong. Is this normal?

I've been looking for PAYE jobs as a sparky aswell but theres nowt out there at the mo. I know if I was sent to a new build tom, i'd be able to test it with my eyes closed ( not recommended ). But looking at some of the questions on here, I find myself second guessing, then I see what some one else has said and I think I was gonna say that.

Well rant over, please feel free to add your 2 peneth worth, or not. Thanks for listening.

Jay

Well you're making a much bigger effort than many by staying in the loop with all of us on here. Practical skills don't fade as quick as forgetting the technical knowledge so your idea of attempting questions on this forum is a good one. The only thing that may affect practical skills is new technologies and tools/methods that may be introduced, but we'll discuss them to death on here any ways.

If you are wanting to attempt submitted questions here, but hesitating in case you are wrong, then why don't you copy the text of the question into this thread you have created. Then you can have a crack and we can have discussions on your findings?

I'm in a similar situation - bit of agency work here and there for the practical side and this forum is definitely a valuable tool for the theory side; sometimes you get it wrong but getting it right more than makes up for that. Even if you do get something wrong nobody's going to bite your head off like they do on some forums - I like to think this is more of a discussion forum to share ideas than a showcase of knowledge. Some people would disagree but they usually seem to be here for confirmation that they're really good at DIY and don't tend to stay long.

you dont really forget, you will often find you may need to refresh your memory from time to time, the biggest problem is not coming across new things to learn if not working at it day in day out

Better to ask a question on here and get it wrong then on site and make a bobo Jay.
I seem to find i remeber the hard stuff and go blank with the easy stuff.
Have a Major brain fart and cant remeber somat they d know down the orange shed.

We all do forget, a couple of months back a thread asked about volt drop on a ring final I did the cals for them, only to be told that I omited the divide by 4 as you do for a ring circuit, I just plain left it out, because over here we never use rings and so all my deisgn work is on radials, so you do forget things, also being an old f##t don't help

You’ll never forget how to ride the bike, but as years go on things get tucked away in to cubbyholes in your brain.

A few years ago I’d passed on a fault to the next shift electrician, totally disgusted with myself for leaving it. Got home and after I’d had a couple of pints of brain lubricant it came to me, a quick dig around and I found my old apprentice logbooks. 35 years that bit of information had been lodged there. A quick phone call to the plant manager to ask him to pass a message on to the electrician got things sorted.
Did I get any thanks for it? The manager made a mistake with my holiday allowance, I had two extra days holiday.
