D

Dooby

I'm guessing some of the blokes on this site REALLY don't get out a lot, what with this constant abuse of (perceived) Electrical Trainee and others. And apparently no actual interest in the trainees forum, which would be fair enough but belies what people have previously professed.
I'm always browsing latest topics trying to learn stuff but despite a few gems out there, primarily what I'm seeing on the updates is constant bitterness and attacks on the likes of myself which really set the tone of the place. Came on here trying to learn, but primarily I've learned why people really don't like dealing with tradesmen. Kinda sad about that.

The Electrical Trainee bashing thing has always been a problem on this and all the other UK electrical forums and it was one of the main reasons this trainee forum was started. I can understand people not liking the system and they can complain about it till they're blue in the face but as far as I'm concerned they can voice their concerns about the system but we don't tolerate the belittling of individual members. If people abuse you on a personal level please use the report button on that particular post.

As for the trainee forum, it is relatively new so we're dealing with teething problems as they arise. If you have any specific problems with it or suggestions on how it can be improved just shout.

No, it's not a personal attack, I just get very very tired of this sort of lazy, ignorant bigotry thrown out to a group of people that include myself. The forums get clogged with this self congratulatory bile. It also concerns me that these people would apply the same blanket opinions on many groups of other people not like themselves, it leaves a bitter taste.

I've found there are many routes to rank incompetence, it's the individual who will ensure they do a good, safe job or not regardless of their training route. I'm offered so much private work and I turn lots of it down when i feel it's beyond me (why would I not be aware of my limits?) I'd like to be able to recommend another electrician to do it but I can't, because so many Sparks I"ve encountered have these arrogant attitudes which I can't condone or recommend to anyone, and the decent blokes at work don't need it the extra money. Yet people on here moan about Electrical Trainee wonders taking their work. I'm one that could have given them work. The irony.

I'm very tired now after a 12 hour day doing the actual job, whilst the young lads who're the final year apprentices and recently qualified full Sparks so lauded on this site stood around scratchign their bums shouting about how good they are and how quickly they could do the job, without getting around to doing much of it so I've had to help them. I used to work in an environment whereby if you didn't do your job, people died, right there and then. These things give you a decent work ethic.

I'm sorry, I should post this on the offending thread- and the one comment in particular that really got to me last night, rather than in answer to you, but - somewhat fatalistically admittedly, there doesn't seem to be any point confusing people there with facts and empirical evidence and it's just something I wanted to get out.

I'm aware you guys are trying with the trainee forum, and it's a big ask for people to take time out of their day to answer all sorts of daftness, but it seems to buy into the politics of this place that so many people seemed to keen to help originally but have avoided it since. And I guess those of us complaining about the Electrical Trainee bashing is as tired as the posts doing it. But I find it quite upsetting. Maybe that's why more women don't join..

Also - I have just bought 3 bottles of red wine for 11 quid and it's all started to get better. Dunno why I didn't think of this before.

The 3 bottles of vino collapso sounds like a good idea, hope it's South African wine :)

What you're highlighting is a social problem. Attacking the individuals in the system achieves nothing other that to alienate recently qualified part p sparkies and divide the industry as a whole. Obviously over time as more go down the fast-track route the numbers on each side will reach parity and beyond eventually.

Like I said (although being non-UK I'm not really qualified to) I'd rather see their energies directed at the system and lobby the MP's, the electrical associations and even go the legal route and use the courts with regard to de-skilling concerns.

Some of the original tutors don't appear to be around but probably for a multitude of reasons. It's a fine line between having too many tutors and not enough but I'm sure the numbers will settle to a happy medium over time. Also a forum board isn't a communications medium like MSN or instant messaging, sometimes a response won't come immediately.

I have noticed this as well. There has been a very strong political debate behind the scenes that started at the same time as this section, nothing to do with the trainee's btw. Some members have walked away from the forum all together and the knock on effect is that some members are no longer on here as well.

I will try and get them back into this section because it seems like I'm the only normal member posting anything up! I'm going to send a pm to a load of members that should be in here giving advise, I can think of 30 people off the top of my head. Think Dan is going to be getting a lot of pm's asking to be mentors, sorry Dan :)

I think there's quite a few experienced members who've already offered their services and are on a shortlist to be advisors in this section.

I was only in here as a moderator but I can help out from time to time on some of the technical questions. Unfortunately being an engineer and operating in sub-saharan Africa I don't have a clue about the UK courses/training system and UK electrical regulations etc.

I wouldnt worry so much mate- thats easy for me to say! There are always good and bad eggs in every walk of life.
I literally shake me head at how pathetic some comments can be on here and other web sites. Also, just because they are published, doesn't mean everyone agrees with the comments. If there were 1000 people reading the post and 100 agreed (which is quite a few nodding heads granted), 900 disagree and are probably thinking "ah shut up with all the bitchin and moanin!"
Get above it (if you can) and think positively that there are lots of people on here who genuinely want to help each other out.

Im new to it all (need to complete my NVQ Level 3, but alas the lads who I was going to go out and complete it with have decided to wind it up), and as a manager in my present job and wife and 3 kids, I certainly do not have time to read ****e, or tolerate it. few years ago I would have risen to it!!
All the best bud.

Cheers for that Ewan D. It bothers me coz I take more, er manure? every day on site than I think blokes here can have any concept of, nothing to do with 5WWs. It's relentless. I go online for a break, so could do without yet more moronic comments.
Joyfully I haven't yet got through the 3 bottles for 11 quid yet. Am on it.

there are DEFINITELY people worse off than you on this planet mate. thats for sure!
doesnt help when you get t*ats on your case for sure.
good luck!
