Phonecall 4PM....''could you come and look at a job a spark has just done for me...I don't know if its right''

Anyway went. It was a new build, nice clean finish etc. Install looked good on initial inspection to the regs etc. Anyway...at that point I didn't know what I was there for. So I asked him....to the response of...

''Do you do certificates????'' I said yes....(brain already clocking this one.) ''could you do me a certificate for this install?, the guy that did the wiring has been a spark for 25 years he just isn't registered with a scheme and I've got nowhere left to turn than to have somebody to sign it off', I can assure you its all to the regs, we don't cut corners'' etc., etc.

I said can't do it...a massive no, no. Told him although it looks o.k, I don't know whats hidden behind the walls and floorboards....and for that reason I'm not willing to do it....

I kid you not! he offered me £1500 to put my name on the installation....

Needless to say I've walked away!

Big money but not willing to do it!!!!

I know alot of guys who would have taken it....

£1500 nice big carrot. can't you sign for test and inspection, and let other bloke sign for design and installation?

Just a thought, and at least you get to eat some of the carrot.

But i admire you for walking away. I have lost count of the amount of calls i get asking if i can do certificates.

Cheers........Howard

Here's my problem....If my name goes on that cert, it comes back to me if anything goes wrong and unfortunately I just aint willing to do it.

Assessor at Napit told me he isn't bothered about complaints from customers etc except for bad installations and alike and if it happens I'm out basically. Is it worth teh risk of a bad name.

Big contracting firm this btw. New build from scratch. Had his own unregistered sparking team do the lot.

couldnt you have tested it and written "LIM" in the box that says about wiring in zones etc to cover yourself?

If it is a new installtion then it has to be Part P self certified with an Installation Certificate to satisfy the local authority under building regs. They will not normally, unless uinder extreme circumstances, accept a PIR on a new installation.
