It is going to keep them occupied , it is already frayed. It is innovative though.

Bet if the owner of the house had come on here asking for advice on moving the switch then there would have been umpteen pages of replies along the lines "it's notifiable" "get a professional in" "you will die in hell for your sins in depriving an electricians child to be able to eat this Christmas" so on and so forth..........

I think that was plan B! Looks to me that this little angled groove was cut on purpose and not just the wood chipping. Plan A for the cord...

It reminds me of working in a very old large house, where under the floor the wire strings were ran for the servant bell pulls

Old servant bell systems . Some of them are works of art.
Lead weights to keep them taught and brass pulley wheels to change directions . The boards themselves are the works of classic tradesmen . A real art.
