Hi, on a job today where previous sparky has fed extractor point in 2.5 t+e from 6mm cooker point on a 32amp breaker for a single socket.....just after your thoughts on this as I thought at first hmm shouldn't of really done it that way mate but after a minute it sort of came to me that if you can spur off ring for an extra socket, where cable is effectively 5mm, on a 32 amp, then this isnt any different really is it as it's got the same protection.......so I presume it's ok to do it this way although feels kinda wrong lol.....

should be on a FCU with a 5 fuse. manufacturers instructions ( for the extractor) will probably specify a 3 or a 5A fuse. that overrides any argument he can put up.

No problem as long as it's fused down in accordance with the regs and manufacturers instructions as the knowledgeable Mr T has pointed out.

I know I should maybe have something else going on Friday evenings, but I don't...just got back onto this forum today after a lapse..

Should the FCU be spurred in 6mm (which would be tight in the terminals I'd imagine) to provide the same CSA as the MCB will protect otherwise the 2.5mm is not protected for overcurrent? And if downgrading fuse to 3A could run 1 or 1.5mm to Fan. Then, if it's on a plug in socket it won't have discrimination (not that it matters I guess at that point) between the 3A in the plug or the FCU...

Am I over-milking this or not thinking right??

if there is a single socket outlet or fcu on the end of the 2.5 then the most load carried will be 13a which is well under the capacity. As long as the Zs is low enough or an Rcd installed for fault protection

Ive had a think about this & reckon the piece of cable between FCU & 32A cooker point should be able to deal with the current the PD has been chosen for. If only for good design.

I'd like to think I,'d always use a bit of 4mm.

Bayonet fixed

That's what I was saying that it's no different to spurring of a ring circuit as that's protected by a 32 amp breaker....it's just 2.5 off cooker point (in with 6mm) up to a single socket and yes it meets disconnection times and on an rcd, and not that long a run of a cable if that makes any difference other than achieving disconnection time required.

Penny's dropped!

& I do see this being as hypothetical as I would have put it on an FCU off Sockets, separate from the Cooker Circuit to begin as everybody would (I assume).

Refer to regs!! Everyone's assumption may not be right with the book. 4 mm for me without getting the book out and the 6mm cooker circuit is different to a ring circuit

GeoffsD, Sedgy34, Spartykus Agreed 4mm needed to the FCU if branching off the 6mm. Nothing like a Dog with a Bone & some Calcs...With a 3A 1362 for the Extract PlugTop would you leave a 13A in the FCU, given that if it was fed 1.5mm to the socket off the load side that gives you protection for that length of cable? & again all hypothetical as I wouldn't like to see this done. Although funnily enough I did come across this once at a Tenancy with another Spark. He ripped it out as the Cooker control unit was above the Hob.

Been away from Sparks for around 6 Months now, just got despondent with lack of opportunity since I finished my qualies in 2010. Kinda getting back into it, did a re-wire as a Mate to a Spark last week.

plenty of cooker outlets with single socket next to them spurred in 2.5mm for gas ignition, although 4mm would be preferable its max draw is limited so cant see an issue.

Any like to test this FCU with a meter? Eli ok? Look in regs? If it blows a 13A which it probably will...insert 3A. Walks away happy.

Indeed, that is, the darkest depths of the dark side. The Emperor will be most pleased. I trust the POWER of the dark side has given you the tools to seek vengance for bike thievery.

Indeed , darth bought lightsabre at screwfix with his trade card in readyness for the revenge of the bike outrage.
Death Star is on stand-by.

However , Wile E. Coyote makes a good sneeky son of a bitch lol.
