kitchen fan advice.

Hi folks working on a house extension and on the drawing the architect has placed the fan right above the cooker, High level but as I say right above it. The room is only 2.25m high so not exactly tall. On the same wall almost 2m to the right is completely free above the bunker and there are no cupboards here. Perfect place for a fan ! Buy for some reason he is insisting that it stays as is!

We are overruling this as we dont feel its safe. The fan isnt slimeline, It sticks out from the wall around 100mm


Any advice or regs on this? Electrical or Gas regs

Council property, No cooker hood was specked as the tenant didnt want one.

There is nothing to say it can't go there but seems stupid when you could have a cooker hood ducted doing a better job.Typical council!

Other than the fan housing getting stained by the fumes,I would say its in the best place for the job intended if there's no hood

Will your proposed position, 2 meters from the majority of kitchen fumes, pass the boiled Haddock test

it was an outside contractor who designed the kitchen


I sent a message to envirovent and they said the following ...

In the BPEC course this is the statement given below. Usually most cooker hoods are made of metal and due to our fans been plastic I would recommend the fan to be at least 1 meter above the hob. I would also disregard the pull cord and put a remote switch in as you don’t want to be leaning over the hob to activate the boost.

• Cooker hoods should be installed with their lowest surface 650mm above an electric hob and 750mm above a gas hob to avoid heat damage, however check with individual manufacturer’s instructions.
