Hi Everyone,

Sorry in advance if this is a silly question.

There is a junction box in my mother's kitchen, on the wall above her kitchen cabinet. It looks like one of these:

Can I ask if it is unsafe to have these in kitchens or is it more about the way it is connected into the the overall circuits please? I recently had my mother's junction box changed and the electrician mentioned that it might be best to change it. He has not said that it is unsafe.

If you were to consider doing a junction box change would you quote for testing and a junction box change please? I would like to request some quotes from local electricians but unsure of what to ask for. Any advice would be appreciated please.

Thanks you,
Vanessa

Unsightly, but not unsafe unless cracked/broken exposing live conductors.
Not sure what you would change it to, as all JB's are equally unsightly! Perhaps a patress box with blank plate?

Hi @DefyG

Thank you so much for the suggestion, this is what I thought. Its looks unsightly but, I believe it to be safe. I also wondered about the box that you recommended with tidier trunking.

Many thanks,
Vanessa

I assume it's hidden by a cornice and can't be seen from the ground. It's fairly common to find junctions above cabinets for under cabinet lighting, or other purposes, and for the most part they're out of harm's way.

Hi @nicebutdim, unfortunately its not hidden. I've been wondering if to add a cornice, but actually maybe the junction box just needs to be moved down as its right at the top of the ceiling. Thank you! Vanessa
