There are notifiable jobs and non notifiable jobs
Extending or altering a circuit in a kitchen is notifiable
There are 2 ways to comply with building regs
1 Notify the Labc before starting the work and pay them a large fee
This puts the responsibility of testing the installation and issuing a compliance certificate on them
2 Become a member of a competent person scheme
You are then allowed to self certificate for compliance with the building regs by notifying your scheme providor of the completed job
The above should not be confused with electrical regulations that stipulate that each job carried out shall have certification to Bs 7671 for the type of work done
Only the domestic sector has this notification procedure Commercial and industrial installation are not included on the whole, however they still require certification to Bs 7671
With the actual job,
Before carrying out any work you need to assess the installation for suitability for extending or altering
Irrelevant of building control, every job should be tested befor being put into service and certification given to the person ordering the work
The majority of people in this country have no knowlege of domestic electrical work having to involve building control ( who by the way, do not have the skill or will to concern themselves with the failed system that is "part p" domestic electrical installation)
Many of those people would do the job and building control would be none the wiser, and would care even less
The only people concerned with notification are electricans who are already registered as competent persons or those who require jobs to show for registration, the general public dont know and on the whole dont care about building control notification
