Is it still ok to fit a flourescent - with diffuser (cover) in a kitchen?

How do we cable to a socket that is out of view i.e. To a washing machine that is not directly below a socket above a worktop?

I've been working on some new builds lately and every kitchen has a flourescent in - they look awful.
