if a infared lamp is put in a loft can it stop the water tank from freezeing

I should think the joists burning would stop it freezing!
Sounds a bit dodgy to say the least mate.
Bear in mind the threat of Legionaires disease if you are planning any sort of 'diy' water/trace heating. IIRC all water should be stored at 65*C or above, not sure how that affects hot water tanks especially.

went to a job today where owner of the house already has this lamp in his loft and one in a pump house to supply water to his house from a well . he said that it stops his cold water tank in the loft from freezeing but when i went up there i could not feel any heat up there off light just a red glow so does it work or not

no stat just a switch he turns on when cold whether is forcast told me it has been there for years and puts new lamp in every 2 years no sign or burning near light and about a meter away from anything else .first time i have seen this done before and hopefully the last.

I have a central heating business, and my advice would be that the cheapest and safest way is simply to lag the tank and pipework properly. This will stop any freezing of the water as well as an infra red light.... and has the advantage of not relying on a supply to work!

thanks for the advice but all i wanted to know was does it work and has anyone seen it done before.i was there to sort out his sky box which is also in his loft so he can hae 2 tvs connected to stb by scart leads.
