sorry the info is scant. just got over the phone from son. laptop is a advent roma 1000. it crashed. on booting up it displays the usual start normally, safe mode etc. but if you hit enter on any option, the screen just blacks out. going to look at it in the morning, so any tips appreciated.

If you got windows cd go into motherboard set-up when prompted as you power up laptop and change your booting option to cd/dvd as your first choice, then save and boot up as normal, ensuring cd/dvd windows disk is in, this will use your disk scripting to load windows and will ignore corrupt loading files on your normal boot, you can also use disk to repair files or if you can get windows up and running and you have created a save file you may be able to jump back to last saved booting files, this should rid any virus etc you picked up off the naughty sites ;)

system restore is what your looking for if you get it running it will restore system as it was in an earlier setting without losing your personel files, only thing is you may need to update some software after when promted as the programmes like your anti virus may restore to older version and not run properly.

If Vista or Windows 7 try turning on laptop and pressing F8 repeatedly. You should get the startup repair options up.....just follow the on-screen instructions. If doing startup repair doesn't solve the problem, then repeat the process and select System Restore. If the F8 option doesn't work.......then get back to me!

not got windows boot up disc. can i download from web?
Not really its key coded to your computer to stop copyright, it does sound like your boot files are corrupted if you dont get past the safe load options, a bit late but always create a rescue disk for boot up depending on your laptop you may be able to rescue the boot sequence in the initial load screen option, when you first turn your computer on look for the prompt to go into the BIAS and hit the appropriate key, be careful what you change in here but you are looking for some kind of boot rescue option ... anything you change wont stay unless you save so read options carefully and follow closely .

Just a simple check for you .... go into the Bias as mentioned before and just check your boot order... that it hasn't been changed by accident and it maybe waiting for a cd/dvd etc check it has the hard drive as primary boot option, if not change the order until it is primary and save..... then try booting from the remaining options list.
